We watched Ladder 49 tonight and I was quite impressed. This was fairly gritty and did not have the atypical happy hollywood ending we have come to expect. Having been on the fire crew in my younger days of working in a fuel terminal I can emphathise just a little with the technical parts of the film. I did complete breathing apparratus and rescue training to two levels and was required to have an annual fitness test as part of that duty. We did a lot of training and I have been on the end of a fog nozzle in the face of a pretty decent fire on the training pad.
I can tell you that fire is not a toy, nor is it a willing tool, it is hot hungry and devious and awaits mistakes and fools equally. What struck me with the movie was the willingness to risk all for your crew mates and victims. This is essentially a 'human' condition as animals will not race into a fire to pull out their kind. Only we humans do that and that begs the question why ?
A reasonable question but not the reason for my post, the reason is that I see that we have inbuilt some redeeming features in spite of our sinful and rebellious nature. That love for one another and sometimes complete strangers is what God designed yes ? The recent Tsunami tragedy also highlights this aspect of out otherwise selfish nature.
Perhaps there is reason for God not to give up on us just yet.........................
